I created Mr. Hatchet, this industrial metal hatchet sculpture, as a playful yet bold exploration of balance and character. From the start, I wanted the piece to feel expressive while still grounded in industrial materials.
I hand-welded this one-of-a-kind sculpture from reclaimed metal. Specifically, I used an axe head, a hatchet head, a large bolt, steel springs, and a section of a garden rake. I brought the components together using MIG welding. As a result, the structure feels strong while the individual elements remain clearly visible.
Instead of refining the surface, I left the metal raw. This choice preserves the texture, wear, and history of the materials. Because of that, the sculpture shows natural variation, oxidation, and marks from previous use. These details add depth and reinforce its industrial character.
This industrial metal hatchet sculpture stands 13.5 inches tall and rests securely on a solid base. Because of its scale, it works especially well as tabletop art. Additionally, it fits comfortably in many settings. Display it in an office, studio, home, gallery, bar, or shop where eclectic art and industrial décor come together.
Ultimately, each piece I make develops through both the materials and the process itself. For that reason, Mr. Hatchet stands as an individual expression shaped by those elements and the moment it was created.
