Welded Railroad Spike Sculpture – The Wandering Spike
The Wandering Spike is a welded railroad spike sculpture I created to capture the quiet feeling of movement and curiosity. I like the idea that even simple materials can tell a story, and this piece felt like a figure walking forward with no destination in mind—just exploring the world one step at a time.
I built this sculpture entirely from reclaimed railroad spikes. Each spike forms part of the figure’s body, arms, and legs, and I shaped the pose to give the piece a natural walking motion. The spikes already carried years of texture and character, which made them perfect for creating a figure that feels both strong and weathered. I welded the components together using a MIG welding process to create a solid, balanced structure.
After the sculpture was assembled, I sealed the metal with a clear protective coat. This finish preserves the natural color variations and patina of the steel while protecting the piece from rust and wear.
At 13 inches tall, The Wandering Spike works well as a tabletop sculpture on a desk, shelf, or console table. It fits naturally in industrial interiors, creative studios, workshops, offices, or modern homes.
