The Wandering Spike – Welded Railroad Spike Sculpture
The Wandering Spike is a welded railroad spike sculpture built from reclaimed railroad spikes and a steel base. It has a simple walking pose that gives it some movement, like it’s headed somewhere but not in any hurry.
I made the figure entirely from railroad spikes, using them for the body, arms, and legs. Each spike has its own wear, texture, and rough edges, which gives the piece a solid, weathered look. I like working with railroad spikes because they already feel heavy, tough, and full of history before anything is done to them.
The walking stance gives the sculpture a little personality without making it too polished or overworked. It still has that raw, industrial feel, but the pose makes it feel more like a character than just a collection of metal parts.
At about 13 inches tall and nearly 6 pounds, this piece has some real weight to it. It works well on a desk, shelf, console table, workbench, office display, or man cave setup. It would also be a solid gift for someone who likes railroad spike art, industrial metal decor, reclaimed steel, or handmade metal sculptures with a little character.
The raw steel is sealed with a clear coat to help protect the finish while keeping the natural color, patina, and texture of the spikes visible. Handmade near Kansas City, Missouri, this one-of-a-kind piece is built from real railroad spikes and made to stand out.
